If I had to select one of the stories that we’ve read to change it into a movie, I would select First Person shooter, I think there would be some interesting choices to make. For the actors, I’m not sure who exactly I would choose, but I would try to find someone who plays roles that aren’t very serious. This would match the lighthearted mood of the story very well. I think that if the actors are humorous, they’ll be able to portray the zombie and something funny rather than a scary incident.
To add music to the story, I would select multiple different songs each with different moods corresponding to the moods of the stories. In the beginning, the narrator is just living his regular life, in the middle it becomes slightly scary with the zombie’s entrance, but quickly becomes much more casual and at the end he gets happier when Janine asks him out. I think the first and third part could have the same casual music, but the second part would have a short soundtrack similar to the one in horror movies. The ending would be really cheery music that is typically played at the end of movies to wrap up the film.
Another change I would make would be that this story takes place in Walmart. While reading this story, the large department that is open late at night reminded me of these two stores. Other sections in this story included the part where the zombie sees the film of other zombies' heads getting blown off in the large flatscreen area. Only stores like Walmart and Meijer have these kinds of extravagant displays. I think Walmart also sells many different types of items, which matches well with the store in the actual story.
I like this idea as it kinda envelopes a bunch of genres into one which is very fitting to the story. "First Person Shooter" doesn't have much reflection and I believe the types of songs put in could really help portray emotion and setting it in Walmart is an excellent idea.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see "First Person Shooter" adapted as a short film (or even expanded for a feature film). I could imagine Alex Lawther or a younger Kumail Nanjaini playing the narrator. (I imagine the narrator being in his late teens or early 20s, so Nanjaini at 42 would probably be too old.) As I think someone might have mentioned during class discussion, I feel like there could be a great shopping montage with the narrator and the zombie. I like the idea of the contrast between horror music (for some of the zombie scenes) and upbeat (indie?) pop for the end. -Ms. O'Brien
